Depression Meds -
October 9th 2014, 06:21 PM
I have a question and I hope someone on here can help me.
I have talked to my school psychiatrist about this and also my parents and they said that it is time that I should consider taking depression medication. How would I go about getting prescribed for that?

Hey Lilly, the easiest way to get a prescription would be your regular doctor. However, the way that medical doctors handle medication for mental health can vary, so you might want to consider a mental health professional who can prescribe medication which would be a psychiatrist. That way, you'll be sure to get a thorough evaluation. Asking your regular doctor for a referral would also be a good way to go.

I second kate's advice, but i would also add that that you should think about anything that might have substances that you're allergic to, and avoid those.
i hope that i helped a bit.

I agree with above. You should ask your doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist that way you will be able to get the right medication for you.

I have been taking depression meds for about 6 months and it may just be me but I haven't been able to find the right meds yet. Every time I get to the right dosage it makes me worse, and then I have to go off them and try something else.... Just wanted to warn you because they aren't magically going to solve anything unfortunately. Talk to your parents about getting prescribed, that may mean getting a psycologist and be able to talk to them regularly so they know how the medication is affecting you. Other than that, that's all the advice I can give you, but I hope it worked somewhat! Contact me any time of you have anymore questions about it and I'll do my best to help!

I completely understand that they are not going to be the be all end all, but it might be worth it to at least try to see if they will help. Nothing else has helped me at all. Medication is my last option.

that can help, as well as a more positive mindset. Think that you can overcome anything, and you probably can.

Would I be old enough to get this medication for myself or to even just go to the hospital alone to get tested for medication, or do I have to have once of my parents present when I go into wherever to take care of this. I, in many ways, do not want my parents to be in the room when I am being tested for the medication, or even just the doctors asking me questions. I always sugar coat everything that I say about what is going on with me when they are around. I don't want to worry them, but I know it is not a good thing to lie about these things when a doctor is evaluating me for meds.

You will probably need a parent for parental consent, but when screening you, you should be alone in the room with the psychiatrist. Psychiatrists usually have three parts of the evaluation when someone is underage. One with just the patient, one with just the parent (if the child is underage), and one with both the patient and the parent. They do this to kind of soften the communication between the underage patient and the parent. All they tend to tell the parent is a brief overview of what they think treatment should be.
Just remember not to be afraid to be honest or else getting help won't be effective!

Hi there,
As the above poster has mentioned, the doctor WILL talk to you when you are alone. However, if you want to be sure about it you can give the doctor a call before your appointment or even text them requesting them to make sure that you get a chance to talk to them alone because you are unable to be honest in front of your parents.
While at the doctor's, you can ask your parents if you can go in alone first or request them to give you some time alone with the doctor. I can understand that you might not be comfortable with asking your parents about this, in that case, go ahead and get in touch with your doctor in advance regarding it.
I hope that this helps.
Please feel free to message me if you'd like to talk about anything.
All the best!
