Tips Of The Month
Each month we share small bits of practical advice that you can implement to improve your life or that of others.

Making a gingerbread house from a kit
Making a gingerbread house is an easy and fun activity to help take your mind off things this holiday season. It can also make a decorative centerpiece if you're hosting a party.
- Find a kit that you love. There are many different types of gingerbread kits, so shop around to find the one that you like the look of most. If you want, you can always buy more candy, colored frosting, and tips for the frosting to decorate with.
- Prepare your equipment. Before you start, gather everything that you will need and set them out on the table.
- Assemble your house. Use the frosting the kit gave you to glue all the parts of the house together and on the tray.
- Decorate your house. You can use the picture on the box for inspiration or decorate it however you see fit. You could also search online for other ideas.
- Enjoy your gingerbread house! Once complete, you can either eat your gingerbread house, or display it somewhere to add to your festive decorations.

Purchasing gifts on a budget
The holidays can be a stressful time of year, especially when it comes to purchasing gifts and sticking to a budget. Read on if you're still looking for gifts!
- Know what your budget is. Think about how much you are able to spend this holiday season and go from there. What is your limit? What is the amount you would prefer to stay around or under? Knowing exactly how much you can spend can help you plan your purchases accordingly.
- Consider who you're buying for. Some people like to spend a certain amount of money on each recipient to keep things even. Others spend more money on those they are close to and budget differently for others.
- Consider buying gifts at an "off time." The prices of gifts and festive items often rise during these months of the year. Consider buying gifts early, even by several months. You can also brave the stores or online sales shortly after Christmas to get a head start on next year. Some people purchase items when they see something that reminds them of the recipient, even if it is early. The downside, however, is that it can be difficult to store gifts if you have a small amount of space.
- Get creative. You don't have to buy traditional gifts! Some of the best gifts are ones that you create yourself. Try making your own gift baskets, or making a holiday baked good or other dish. Your recipients will appreciate the thought you put into it regardless of what you give them.

Snow globe cookie jar
Use your creativity and some baked goods to create a tasty and festive gift. Alternatively, skip the cookies altogether and use it as a craft instead.
[Source]
- Find what you'll need. For this tasty craft, you'll need a clear glass jar that it suitable for food, a paint brush, white paint, cookies, misc holiday décor and some ribbon.
- Paint small white circles onto the front of a clear glass jar. Allow the jar to dry and make sure that the inside of it is clean and ready for cookies!
- Choose the type of cookie you want to use. This craft is eye popping with snowball or wedding cookies, but can also be used with others. Bake the cookies or purchase the ones you would like to use.
- Put the cookies into the jar, and add other décor to the top to create your desired scene. Get creative! You can use any cookies or decorations to make many different scenes.
- Finally, wrap your chosen ribbon around the jar and give it to someone you care about. Know that if you don't want to use or gift cookies, this can be a non-edible craft when used with cotton balls to simulate snow.
