Navigating the holidays with food allergies

The holidays may be considered the most wonderful time of the year, but they do come with their fair share of stress. For someone living with food allergies, this time of year comes with additional challenges. Here are some tips for enjoying the holidays while managing your needs.
  • Give friendly reminders. While your friends and family should be well aware of your allergies, it doesn’t hurt to gently remind them of your restrictions as the holiday's approach. It might seem like a hassle, and like something you shouldn’t have to do, but the most important thing is your health and safety.
  • Consider hosting gatherings. If possible, consider hosting parties and family meals at your home. That way, you will have control over the ingredients in the food that is served. You can also plan activities that don’t revolve around food, allowing you to celebrate without worrying about your allergies.
  • Get Creative. Cooking and baking are common holiday activities and dietary restrictions are a challenge, but that doesn’t mean your diet has to be boring. Experiment in the kitchen with holiday favorites adapted to meet your needs. You might find a new favorite snack, or rediscover a treat that you thought was off-limits.
  • Bring your own food. If you’ve been invited to someone else’s home, offer to bring something, or to help prepare the meal. That way you’ll know ahead of time which items are safe for you. A lot of meals may be a pot-luck style where everyone brings a dish. This allows you to bring something you can eat without feeling out of place.

Three simple DIY face scrubs

Many people enjoy utilizing exfoliating face scrubs but they can be pricey to buy. This tip will give you three DIY face scrubs that you can make in the comfort of your own home and for a fraction of what you'd pay in stores.
  • Sugar face scrub. This recipe calls for two simple ingredients which is one of the reasons I have tried and loved this one. What you will need is 1 tbsp of coconut oil and 2 tbsp of sugar. Combine the two ingredients in a bowl. Apply this scrub to your face and neck using gentle circular motions. Rinse with warm water after about 60 seconds.
  • Chocolate sugar face scrub. This recipe calls for a few more ingredients but it's still pretty simple to put together. You will need 1/4 a cup of brown sugar, 1/8 a cup of olive oil, 1 tbsp coco powder and 1/4 cup of vanilla. After you've gathered all the ingredients, mix them in a bowl. Once they are mixed you can use it on your face. Rub it onto your skin for 60 seconds and then let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water after 10 minutes.
  • Blueberry and honey scrub. This recipe is probably the one that will require the most work because you will need to use a food processor. However, it might still be a fun one to use every once in a while. You will need 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, 2 tbsp honey and 1 to 2 tbsp of sugar. Put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend until it is smooth. Apply a liberal amount to your face and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water after 15 minutes.

Four ways to help ease dog's constipation

For many dog owners, sometimes our pets become constipated. This can cause your pet some difficulty going. Here are four tips you could try to help ease your dog's constipation.
  • Increase your dog’s water intake. If your dog isn't drinking enough you can add tuna oil or plain chicken broth to their water. This may encourage your dog to drink the flavored water.
  • Increasing your dog’s fiber. Adding canned pumpkin to your dog's meals can help assist with both diarrhea and constipation as it is packed with fiber and beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A. Visiting a veterinarian can also prescribe a stool softener.
  • Take your dog outside for exercise. Having an active dog allows the intestines to work and allows the stool to move freely. Try going for multiple short 15 minute walks. Play indoors with your dog with a ball or have them follow you around the house in a fast-paced walk.
  • Other creative tips to help your dog’s constipation. Having a picky dog can bring some difficulty in being able to incorporate tips that will be helpful for their constipation. Try giving them flavored ice cubes to lick or fill a food ball up with pumpkin treats so they are active while getting fibre.
