Tips Of The Month

Each month we share small bits of practical advice that you can implement to improve your life or that of others.

==========

Avoiding summer boredom

Summer is a favourite time of year for many. The pressures of school can finally be cast aside with the knowledge that there are three months of freedom to be enjoyed. However, those three months can start dragging on when it seems like there is nothing new left to do. That's what these tips are for! Use them to destroy the boredom that can start to creep in a few weeks into summer and make this your best one yet!
  • Spontaneity is key! Summer is the time to take chances and create new memories; if there is something that you have never tried before, use these three months as an opportunity to try something new. Some of the best hobbies, restaurants, or new hangouts can be discovered simply by saying yes to something new instead of sticking with routine.
  • Although being spontaneous is great, some events call for a little more planning. Maybe you have always wanted to go to a certain music festival. Maybe there is a trip that you have been wanting to take that you can finally afford. Stop wishing for those things and start putting them into action. Budget for whatever it is you want to do. If it's a group activity, find people who are interested in going with you. Even though bigger events do take a lot of planning, it is better than wondering what it would be like if you were there.
  • Stay out of the house as much as possible! Yes, summer is a time to relax and that does include vegging out, but your home is one of the quickest places for you to get bored. Call up some friends and hang out by the local pool with snacks and a good book. Visit the local bowling alley or movie theatre. Even things as simple as going for a coffee or a bite to eat with a friend can bring some entertainment back into summer.

How to make a fruit smoothie

Fruit smoothies are a delicious, healthy and fun way to keep cool in the summer months. Follow this basic method and you'll be enjoying a fruit smoothie in no time.
  • Choose a selection of fruit, either fresh or frozen. If you are using fresh fruit, cut it into small pieces. If you are using frozen fruit, then you won't need to use as much ice later. Finding a delicious combination of fruit is part of what makes creating your own fruit smoothie enjoyable.
  • Next, choose a liquid part to use. This could include dairy milk, soy milk, yoghurt, fruit juice, or water.
  • Add the fruit into a blender or food processor, pour the liquid on top and add a couple of ice cubes. If you find that the mixture is too thick later, more ice cubes can be added afterwards. Do be careful not to make the blender/food processor too full. Start blending on a low setting and gradually increase it to a medium setting.
  • If you want to treat yourself, try blending a little vanilla ice cream or frozen yoghurt into the mixture.
  • Once everything has been blended thoroughly, you may wish to taste the smoothie, as you can tweak the flavour before serving. If it is not sweet enough, perhaps add a little icing sugar, honey or another sweetener of your choice.
  • When you are happy with the taste, pour the smoothie into serving glasses and garnish with a fruit or two!

How to get a good night's sleep

Lack of sleep can have a big impact on how you feel during the day. Here are some tips on how you can change your routine for a better night's sleep.
  • Keep active during the day, so that you will feel tired at night.
  • Try to eat a few hours before going to sleep, and avoid drinking too much later in the evening, as it may interrupt your sleep.
  • Engage in calming activities before you sleep, such as reading a book, meditation, reflecting on the best parts of the day, and having a warm bath. Having a relaxing routine is a way of telling your body that it is time to rest.
  • Ensure that your bedroom is dark enough; consider wearing an eye mask if you are sensitive to light. Also make sure that the bedroom temperature is comfortable, as being too warm or too cold can affect how well you sleep.
  • Avoid any situations that may stress you during the few hours before bedtime. If you find that your mind is full of thoughts about what you need to do the next day, or if you are occupied by other worries, write them all down to help clear your mind for the night.
  • Remove distractions; try not to fall asleep in front of the television, and switch your cell phone to silent mode to avoid disturbances during the night.
