Tips Of The Month

Making the most out of miserable weather
If it’s cold or wet outside, you may be tempted to stay inside until the weather clears up – but if you’re enthusiastic (and careful) you can enjoy your time outside no matter what the weather. Here are some fun activities you can try:
- If it’s been raining, go down to the local creek or stream and have leaf races with a friend: you each place a leaf in the creek, then let the water carry it to a designated spot: whoever’s leaf gets there first wins.
- Jump in puddles! This is something many of you will have done as children, but you’re never too old for it. Just make sure you’re wearing the right shoes, and be careful not to splash anyone else.
- Dance in the rain. This may sound silly, but it’s actually a lot of fun – especially if you do it with a friend. Just don’t stay out too long, and make sure you dry yourself off properly when you get back inside.
- If it’s cold, you can go on a winter picnic – dress yourself up warmly and take lots of warm food and drink (like soup and hot cocoa) outside. You can set it up like a regular picnic (complete with basket and blanket), but just be make sure you don’t get too cold – be especially careful if you take children, because they can get cold a lot more easily.

Staying focused while using the computer
When working on the computer, many of us are susceptible to the many distractions lurking on the Internet and elsewhere around us. Here are some tips on how you can stay focused while using the computer, so you can use your time more productively.
- Clutter on our computer desktops can distract us, so minimise the amount of files and programs on the desktop. Organise files into folders so you can easily retrieve them, and choose a simple desktop wallpaper.
- Manage your notifications. Having notifications 'pop up' while working can be a major distraction. Instead of visual notifications, consider using audio alerts as the sound can be muted, rather than having to adjust settings each time you want to be productive.
- Consider the websites that distract you and disable them for a certain period of time. If you use a PC, try LeechBlock (in Firefox) or StayFocusd (in Chrome). If you use a Mac computer, try using the application SelfControl. These applications will effectively block those distracting websites for as long as you need to focus on your work.
- Control your social time. Rather than replying to an e-mail as soon as you receive it, try batch processing, where you respond to several e-mails in one go. This method can also be applied to social networking websites.
- Prioritise your tasks and set aside time for each. Use a timer and begin working, focusing on that one task. Twenty-minute intervals may be a good starting place, then gradually build up to a longer time periods.

How to save money on fuel
With fuel prices at a tremendous high, driving economically is important if you want to save money. If you want to save money on fuel, the following tips may help.
- If you are going on a long journey or using an unfamiliar route, plan ahead. Check the map and roadworks before setting out, take a Sat Nav with you, and if you get lost, stop and ask for directions.
- Remove all excess weight. For example, clear out the boot/trunk and take off the roof rack when it is not in use.
- On a hot day, open windows and avoid using the air conditioning for short journeys.
- Fill your tank up to its full capacity, and don't refuel for the sake of topping up the tank; this will cut down on your trips to the petrol station.
- Drive smoothly and at a consistent speed where possible, as sharp acceleration and heavy braking will use up more fuel. Also, try to anticipate the traffic and the stop signs ahead, so that you can slow down in good time and maintain a lower speed rather than coming to a halt. Stopping and starting constantly will burn fuel faster.
- Consider car sharing, combining trips, and always park in the first space you find.
