Tips Of The Month
Each month we share small bits of practical advice that you can implement to improve your life or that of others.
==========
What to do if you are being physically abused
Physical abuse is the deliberate act of causing pain and injury to others. It can be a very scary time, but remember that it is not your fault. Your safety should always come first, and here are a few tips on what you can do.
- Confide in trustworthy friends and family to gain their support and assistance should you need it. Create a code word that you could use with your family and friends, so that they can call for help if you are in danger.
- If you get an inkling of impending abuse, avoid dangerous places, for example, a kitchen, where there are potential weapons that could be used in the heat of the moment.
- Make a list of people to call, if you need help calling the authorities, or if you need a place to stay, and memorise their contact numbers.
- Plan an escape route if you need to leave in a hurry, and leave some belongings with a trusted friend or family member.
- Seek support from a professional, as working through the traumatic event can help you to heal and move on.
==========
Keeping up with homework
Many of you will have the same goal in mind for the new school year: To get good grades. In order to achieve good grades, it is expected that you complete your homework on time, which can be difficult for a lot of people! Here are a few tips on how to keep up with homework.
- Start your homework if the teacher gives you free time at the end of class. This will give you a head start so that you will not have to do as much after school. You will also have the opportunity to ask your teacher for help, should you not understand the homework.
- Buy a day planner/agenda. You can write down what the homework is, and when it is due. This will help you to stay organised.
- Find a quiet place where you can focus on your homework without interruption, such as your bedroom or in a library.
- Complete the homework that is due in first. For example, if you have a 2,000 word essay due in a week, and a short take-home quiz due tomorrow, get the quiz out of the way first. Doing the quiz first will allow you to focus on the essay.
- Make sure that you take frequent, short breaks. For example, for every hour of homework that you do, take a fifteen-minute break.
- Save some time at the end to check over your work. Make sure that you have completed all your homework. If you are unsure about anything, circle the part that confuses you, and then ask your teacher about it the next day.
==========
How to deal with anxiety
Feeling anxious is an unpleasant feeling, but it is something that many of us experience; you are not alone. Here are some tips that will help you deal with anxiety.
- Try some yoga, deep breathing, tai chi and meditation to help you relax and loosen up. It might be helpful to visualise a calm, peaceful place. While sitting in front of the television or at the computer may be a good distraction, it will only relax you temporarily.
- Get enough sleep, exercise and eat healthy foods. Avoid caffeine, chocolate and sugar, as they are known to increase anxiety levels.
- Spend time outside in the fresh air. Go for a walk or a bike ride in your local area.
- Think positively to help you shift your focus and to feel less preoccupied with your worries.
- Spend some time with family and friends. Talking to someone is a great way to get some anxiety of your chest, as they might have felt the same way as you have at some point.
