Tips Of The Month
Each month we share small bits of practical advice that you can implement to improve your life or that of others.
==========
Staying positive
It is important to remain positive during difficult times, in order to help you overcome life's many obstacles. Here are some tips on how to stay positive.
- Don't get lost in self pity. Remember that you have the ability to change your outlook on life and the situation that you are in. If you cannot change the situation, then you can change the way you react to it. This is something that you can continually work on to increase your own happiness during tough times.
- Be thankful for the good things in your life. We all have some things in our lives that we wish were different. When you are feeling down about these things, make a list of the things you are thankful for. It is better to focus on the positive, rather than the negative.
- Change unhealthy self-talk. When you have a negative thought about yourself, counter it with two positives. Challenge your thinking: are the things that you are saying about yourself honestly true?
- Set goals for yourself. By setting goals, it gives you a reason to live and something to work for. Once you meet these goals, you will have feelings of self worth and happiness.
- Learn from your mistakes. We all make mistakes. It is how we react to them that defines us. You will make it a lot further in life if you accept the mistakes you have made, learn from them and move on. People often think that making mistakes automatically makes us a bad person. This isn't true. It just means that we still have room to grow and things to learn.

How to cope with emotional abuse
Emotional abuse can affect anyone, but it can be difficult to detect as it often happens "behind closed doors" and the scars are invisible. It can have damaging effects on your mental health, from lowered self-esteem to extreme anxiety, but you do not have to suffer with this forever. Here are some tips on how to cope with and prevent emotional abuse.
- Learn to recognise the signs of emotional abuse, which can include: repeated verbal aggression, such as shouting, criticising, threatening, name-calling and commanding; dominating and controlling behaviour; and invalidating and dismissing your feelings.
- Emotionally abusive people tend to have a need for control. If this type of situation occurs, try not to give in and offer reasonable alternatives so that a compromise can be met.
- Take the responsibility to change your circumstances by talking to your abuser and using assertion to tell him/her that you will not tolerate that kind of behaviour.
- Try not to respond to the emotional abuse by showing that you are upset. Show that you are in control and leave the abusive environment if you need to.
- Seek support from the people who love and care about you most. Speaking to a counsellor may also be beneficial.

Home-made chocolate cookies
Chocolate chip cookies make delicious treats to serve to guests, or if you just want to indulge. Here is a quick and easy way to make chocolate chip cookies.
- Pre-heat the oven to 200°C, and line two baking trays with non-stick paper.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together 100g butter and 100g caster sugar, until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Add 1 egg into the mixture, and sift in 175g plain flour and 1/2 tsp baking powder. Combine the ingredients, then stir in 150g chocolate chips.
- Roll the mixture into 18 small balls and place them equally onto the baking trays, leaving enough room for the mixture to spread as it cooks. Pat down each ball to make them flatter.
- Bake the cookie dough for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown (the time may vary depending on the oven). Leave the cookies to cool on the baking tray for five minutes, then place them on a wire rack to allow them to cool completely.
