TeenHelp News

TeenHelp regularly makes changes to its site and services. Some of these are large and noticeable, and others are small and much less so, but each one contributes to the positive development of TeenHelp and how our users experience our community. Below are some of the most recent developments.

New structure for Facilitated Chat Room Discussions (May 16th 2010)

TeenHelp have been running weekly discussions in the Chat Room for over nine months now. We have covered a variety of topics that have each been immensely popular. However, the way we currently choose topics is sometimes inconsistent, which leads to subjects being excluded from the discussions for extended periods of time. To remedy this we are announcing a permanent schedule for FCRDs that will ensure more predictability for some topics. The schedule will be composed of some fixed topics that will occur frequently, some flexible topic groupings that will always generate a certain type of discussion, and some free topics, which will be filled in from suggestions from both Staff and users.

The following is our new schedule, with the first week commencing next Saturday (May 22nd 2010):

Week 1: Puberty and growing up
Week 2: Depression
Week 3: Free
Week 4: Free (Mind and Body)
Week 5: Relationships
Week 6: Free
Week 7: Free
Week 8: Triggers
Week 9: Free (Sex and Relationships)
Week 10: Free
Week 11: Health (drop in)
Week 12: Mental Health (drop in)

Organisational changes (April 30th 2010)

Over the last several months we have been making changes to our internal procedures, particularly to the way that Disputes and Performance Committees operate, with some Talent Committee changes currently in progress. These changes have been focused around streamlining our procedures and looking at how each committee can become more effective at obtaining its goals. While we don't want to bore you with the details of these changes, we are confident that each one will result in the issues each committee deals with being resolved more quickly and efficiently.

Social Networking Team members needed (April 10th 2010 onwards)

Hopeline

Hopeline (Kristin Brooks Hope Center) is a national organisation in the USA that offers the message of hope. It raises awareness that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable. Hopeline created a telephone network called 1-800-SUICIDE to connect people in despair to a national crisis centre for support and advice, aiming for all calls to be answered quickly by those trained to deal with crises. Hopeline was created in 1998 after the suicide of its founder's wife and has been supporting millions of people since.

Tips Of The Month

Each month we share small bits of practical advice that you can implement to improve your life or that of others. This month we provide tips for preparing for exams, improving posture and coping with allergies.

==========

Preparing for exams

Since the end of the school year is coming we all have exams. In order to protect yourself from getting too stressed out, you need to take care of yourself:
  • Eat properly: Have a good amount of fruits and vegetables and not too much caffeine or sweets.
  • Sleep properly: Make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep a night to ensure you are well rested.
  • Take breaks: When studying it is better to take small ten minute breaks every hour or so to help mind, body and learning.
We all wish you luck on your upcoming exams. If you're having difficulties with school or exams and would like to seek advice or support, please be sure to visit our Education and Careers forum. We'd love to help!

Good posture

Many teens have pain in their backs due to poor posture. Here are a few ways to help you avoid back aches.
  • When carrying a bag on your back make sure you don't have too much weight in it. If the bag pulls down on your back it can cause pain.
  • Try not to slouch. Slouching can cause poor posture and back pain that could affect you in the future.
  • Exercising at least thirty minutes a day can greatly improve your posture.
If you have any more questions about maintaining a healthy posture, please be sure to visit our General Health forum, where we are always happy to help you out.

==========

The allergy season

The Spring season is also known as the allergy season because this time of the year many of us get itchy, watery eyes and are constantly sneezing. These tips will help you get through the next few months:
  • Make sure you are always regularly washing your hands.
  • Depending on what allergy you have, your doctor can prescribe you medication to help relax the symptoms.
  • Some weather websites have an area informing you if there will be a high chance of pollen, trees, etc. This way you can plan out your day more efficiently.
If you have any more questions about maintaining a healthy posture, please be sure to visit our General Health forum, where we are always happy to help you out.
