For those of you that don't know, today is the 28th of July.
Meaning?
Well in my house, it means everyone is especially considerate of my dad..aka, the king of the household...aka...#1. Not that we aren't already extra considerate.
Today, my dad turns 53. (or is it 52? or is it 54? meh, that's besides the point.) So since I'm not in any state to be spending money (even though I just spend $35 on Green Day tickets, shhh don't tell dad) I thought I would bake him a cake for his birthday...practical, cheap, and has potential for creativity.
So, I bake his favorite, lemon cake with white frosting. (okay, I lied. I'm not so sure about the frosting being his favorite...and this frosting had little chunks sprinkles in it, but nonetheless, delicious)
So it comes out of the oven smelling like a grandmothers famous cookies baked on a sunday afternoon...there's something about grandmothers and cookies and sundays that smell like home sweet home.
After trying to take it out of the pan, which just took off a whole corner of the cake, I frosted it.
I hate undecorated cakes, especially with white frosting. It's like leaving an open canvas completely blank and then digesting it. So, I rummaged through our stove-side junk drawer until I found 2 colored gel icing tubes, an orange and a green.
I squeezed the orange tube, and out came four drips of orange liquid. Not exactly gel status.
So, I tried the green. It worked as it should for a brief second, until it too started coming out as big dark green blobs.
By this time, my cake was just white with orange and green dots with a broken corner. It didn't exactly say "happy birthday". But this was my gift to my dad, I had to at least try to fix it.
So, I tried to remove the orange and green blobs with a butter knife...which *big surprise* didn't work as I'd hoped. Here's what I didn't know. A) Gel icing doesn't come off of frosting willingly and 2) Green and orange make a sickly shade of brown. Crap. (No pun intended)
Thinking completely rationally, I take the knife and scoop up all the now-brown frosting, and (since my mom told me never to waste food) I ate it. After about four spoonfuls of icky colored icing, finally all that was left was blobs of green.
It still didn't look presentable, so I mixed the green with the white creating a nice lime color. My plan is to skip the whole story of how it came to be green, and just claim that the cake is lemon-lime

Happy Birthday Dad
