TL;DR - Matalan are bastards.

This week has gone by so fast! On Thursday I realised "holy crap it's Friday tomorrow!"
It was so weird.
Work is still going good. On Monday morning I was checking my emails when Robert, the HR manager came out of his office and started talking to Sheila, my supervisor. I didn't listen in because, obviously, it's not my place to and he wasn't talking to me, even though it did seem to be a general thing and not something private. I look up and he's stood in front of my desk smiling. He kept smiling and said "It's getting near time to organise the Christmas lunch." So I went "You're looking at me and smiling." he said "I'm looking at you and smiling."
I had just agreed to do it and was listening to advice from him and Sheila on the best ways to go about it when Colleen from Marketing came in with a couple of sheets of paper. She made a beeline for me, realised what we were talking about, looked REALLY relieved and said "I was just coming down here to beg Louise to organise this!"
I don't really know why no one else wants to do it, I've quite enjoyed organising it. I made a shortlist of 7 places with a good menu at a decent price, eventually went for a hotel that's just up the hill from the office. I just need everyone to confirm if they can make it and I can get the deposit paid!
I got a letter in from Matalan today. My P45 and final payslip. The bastards have taken my final wage because, by their calculations, I have taken 25.41 hours of holiday more than I'm entitled to.
So first, I never signed a contract when they made me permanent staff. I never even SAW a contract.
Second, I took 5 weekends off this year. I only work Saturday and Sunday. That's 10 days. But because you can't just say "I'm going away that week can I have the weekend off?" and you need to take the entire week *JUST IN CASE* they decide put you in for a weekday shift, the two midweek holidays I had have been counted. Even then, that's 3 weeks in total. 25 hours is 6 shifts so basically I was allowed two weeks off a year. 14 days holiday.
Wow. That's generous.
Royal Blind I get 30 days annual leave plus public holidays. Oh, and guess what, THESE HOLIDAYS DON'T INCLUDE DAYS YOU DON'T WORK ANYWAY. If I take a long Friday-Monday weekend that counts as 2 days. If I did that at Matalan it'd count as 4 and you'd probably be put down to work anyway.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. It's annoyed me SO much. I was relying on my final pay from them to come in this week, I don't get my first Royal Blind pay until the 28th. I have £50 until then and £29 of that goes to my phone bill. So essentially I have about £20 to pay for all the food I'll need for the next two weeks, plus travel.
Greeeeat. My parents said they'll give me money if I need it but I hate relying on them.
Thankfully Pets at Home sent me £20 in vouchers as an apology so I can at least keep Alfonso alive that long.
Oh, and one last moan. We're still waiting for my reference from Matalan. It was sent to them just over a MONTH ago and they haven't bothered. Every time Sheila tries to call to ask about it, the phone rings out.
I called last night and spoke to one of the managers, Allan, he said he'd leave a note for the admin woman who's in tomorrow because the manager who it was addressed to was on holiday all last week and isn't back till next Thursday.
I see she gets all the holidays she wants, she's always away. Bet it never gets taken off her wage.

I'm contacting them to request copies of the terms and conditions of my employment, my contract, a copy of their grievance policy, and a list of all my absences since April this year when the holiday year started.
My cousin's fiancée works in HR and she's outraged so she's told me to ask for the documents, tell them CAB advised me to do it, and then raise a grievance on the basis that I am having holidays taken for days I wasn't supposed to work and therefore have not gone over my holiday allowance and they have absolutely no right to withhold money that is rightfully mine.Posted October 14th 2014 at 04:05 PM by LlamaLlamaDuck
