I'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster, eating us alive

As much as I like the little alcove I live in, I'm actually scared to leave the house or be home alone at the moment. I mean, there are only 3 other houses in the street and pensioners live in them all so we've never had any trouble. But the houses over the wall from our back garden are on a street that's a bit.... dodgy. To say the least. And the street attached to that one isn't the nicest either. But last night there was a really odd noise, so I went through and asked mum if she'd heard thunder outside. She said she doubted it since it was pretty cold yesterday and it was cloudy outside, but she went outside to look anyway. I opened my window and heard men shouting and some women screaming really loudly. There were at least 2 dogs barking as well. Mum came through and told me it sounded like a streetfight.
I said we should call the police since it sounded really nasty and one woman was obviously really upset by the way she was screaming. But we didn't know the actual name of the street. So we waited for my dad to get back from the pub and asked him. He went out to get his ladders from the garage and looked over the wall to see what was going on. He told us there was a police car there already, but then decided it was a smart idea to get on his bike and cycle round for a closer look. Way to scare me almost to death, I was convinced he was going to get himself killed.
When dad got back he said someone had set a pick up truck on fire right down the road and the firemen had just arrived to sort it. Meanwhile we'd seen 3 police cars and an ambulance go by. Dad said he reckoned half the police in the country were there by this point and he'd spoken to someone who lived there who told him that someone had been killed. We think that since the person was run over, it was probably the truck that did it, and the truck was likely stolen so someone torched it to get rid of the evidence.
All the news says is that "A man has died after a vehicle was deliberately driven at him." and that another is in hospital.
Needless to say I got very little sleep last night. Luckily I think they've reopened the bit where the fire was, otherwise I'd need to take a half hour detour for what should be a 5 minute walk later.
This place is too nice for this to happen. We're all completely in shock. Mum wanted to go offer the firemen a cup of tea to show that we're not all bad. As if yesterday wasn't bad enough we've now got police crawling everywhere within half a mile of that street.
This stuff isn't meant to actually happen. I texted my girlfriend last night about it since I was freaking out and she said it sounded like an episode of Eastenders. Proves my point that all these things aren't meant to happen in real life, just overdramatic TV shows.

I still don't want to leave the house, for the record.
