Visiting the Maldives
Posted June 9th 2013 at 09:50 PM by Adam the Fish
Hooray for my first proper Bucket List item!
And (surprise, surprise), I reckon it's going to be one of the least achievable.
Item #: 1
Name: Visit the Maldives
Set: 09/06/13
Timescale: Long-Term Goals / Lifetime Ambitions (3 years - Death)
Description: Take a holiday to a Maldivian Island.
I've always wanted to be a little more adventurous in my holidays - particularly now I go to secondary school and hear of the most wonderful times in other countries imaginable - and since I first discovered the Maldives, I've thought they were beautiful.
And so, I'd like to go, and experience some of their amazing culture, nature and activities.
Two problems.
1) Money. The flights out there are expensive!
Well, I lie. They're normal-price, edging towards cheap. That doesn't mean I can afford them, though.
Using my massive capacity for mental arithmetic*, I worked out that I'll be 65 before I can afford a one-way, outbound flight (on my current income).
Other than that I'll statistically be dead before I can afford the transport to get to the airport (and, on the side, the actual holiday ), the other problem arises...
* And a calculator
2) The Maldives are very quickly and dramatically being effected by the rising sea levels from the ice caps melting as a result of climate change.
This means that even if I did something really odd, like actually earning money (when I'm old enough), the flight I take out would sink my island before I got on it!
Or, seeing the most serious side of the issue the islands will likely have been completely flooded if I did get a decent enough job to make me anywhere near enough money.
Basically, to achieve this, I need to either stop climate change or go using someone else's money.
I'm inclined to try the former. No-one will every give me their money. That would be generous. Which would be unacceptably kind.
So...be green, everyone! (maybe this would be a good starting point? )
Let's see where I can get with this. I'll have to get a job. This could be interesting.
And (surprise, surprise), I reckon it's going to be one of the least achievable.
